Piano Solo

This volume contains the first publications of five moderately difficult compositions for piano solo that collectively span the bulk of Florence Price’s career as composer. Two works – A Wee Bit of Erin and Broadway at Night – offer Price’s musical responses to different facets of her adopted home city of Chicago while another, Southern Sketches, evidently written in the mid-1930s, offers a lyrical, seemingly nostalgic, and distinctly African American look back at the South where she was born and raised. The collection is rounded out by A Thought for May and Dainty Feet – more expansive, harmonically and formally adventurous works that reveal Price’s gifts as melodist and her sense of musical adventure. The result is a compact collection that offers a cross-section of Florence Price’s stylistic diversity and a glimpse into the workings of one of the most prodigious musical imaginations of the early twentieth century.
