Cantata 225: Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied
Johann Sebastian Bach

Full Score
Unlike most of the other Bach motets Singet dem Herrn was probably not composed for a funeral service, but more likely for a happy occasion, perhaps an anniversary. Further information does not survive, only the approximate date of composition of 1726/1727 can be deduced from the sources. Bach’s motet has rightly been described as “music above music”; right at the start the cry “Singet, singet, singet” in one choir is answered by the jubilantly-sung melisma of the other choir!
